Carowinds 2012 Photo Trip Report
January 17, 2013

At 74 degrees, this first drop isn't the steepest ever, but it's close enough to vertical to impress.

I'm so happy to say that after all the years I've been riding roller coasters, wailing down a drop like this is still a moment of pure, mind-expanding joy. And those B&M Speed seats and clamshell restraints belong in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent design collection. THE BEST.

As this is an L-shaped out-and-back coaster, there are a few turns, like this first towering, twisting drop to the right.

Ballistic, balletic.

And the sinewy, swoopy Hammerhead U-turn at the far end of the course rides as good as it looks.

Pick a seat on the driver's side of the train to really appreciate the steep bank of this curve.

But the hills, all those hills, and to the last, they are monstrous airtime sweatshops, cranking out negative G-forces by the boatload. Every time, soaring over every parabola, your haunches are well north of the seat scoops for nearly the entire drop.
